How Can I Prevent COVID-19?

As of this writing, there is no vaccine to prevent the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), so the best thing for people to do is avoid exposure if at all possible. According to the Florida Department of Health, those who are most susceptible to COVID-19 include adults age 60 and older, and people who already have an underlying health condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease.

What You Can Do Now

To prevent COVID-19, people are being asked to change their daily behaviors. Already, local and state governments across the country have done much to change people’s habits by closing schools, canceling events, closing gyms, asking people to cook their eggs and meats thoroughly, and asking people to wash their hands with soap often.

One of the biggest things that are being asked of people is to practice “social distancing,” which basically means to avoid crowds and keep your distance from people. The Florida Department of Health is saying that if you’re going to be around others, to keep a 6-foot distance between you and the other person whenever possible. People are also being asked to:

  • Avoid hugs
  • Avoid shaking hands
  • Avoid gatherings in close quarters
  • Cancel group gatherings
  • Wash hands with soap frequently for at least 20 seconds
  • Use hand sanitizer often
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces on a daily basis

Why practice social distancing? Because the main way the virus is spread is from person-to-person. So, if you’re someplace and someone coughs or sneezes, small liquid droplets will spray from their nose and mouth, which could contain the coronavirus. If you’re too close to someone who is coughing or sneezing and you inhale the droplets, you could contract the coronavirus if that person has it.
